The Hidden Cost of Engineers Who Never Ask Why
There is a hidden tax inside most SaaS engineering organizations right now, and it is not technical debt.
There is a hidden tax inside most SaaS engineering organizations right now. It is not technical debt, and it does not show up in a sprint report. It is the cost of engineers who build exactly what the ticket says, even when the ticket is wrong.
A spec that is slightly off becomes a feature that is slightly useless. Multiply that across a quarter and you have a roadmap full of work that shipped on time and changed nothing.
Senior engineers earn their title by asking why. Why does this user need this? What happens if we do not build it? Is there a smaller version that proves the idea first? Those questions feel like friction in the moment and save months over a year.
When we staff a team we look for this habit explicitly. Technical skill is table stakes. Judgement is what you are actually paying for.
